The semitic migrations out of Mesopotamia had resulted in large communities in the form of the Amorites and Arameans in regions around south eastern Turkey and modern day northern Syria. The Arameans were centred around Harran, and likely shared a similar ancestry to Abraham (remember Abram and father lived here for some time before Abram left for Canaan?). Paddan-Aram was in that region, and was where Jacob headed off to to find Rebekah's tribe and his future wives.
