Numbers 26-27

From here, Moses could look across the Dead Sea, Jordan valley and into the Promised Land.

After the plague, Moses takes another census. Able bodied men above 20 years of age numbered 601,730....a formidable army.

Then YHWH brings Moses up the mountain in the Abarim range...(Deuteronomy 34:1-7 identifies this as Mt Nebo). Moses will not enter the Promised Land.
12 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up this mountain in the Abarim range and see the land I have given the Israelites. 13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, 14 for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin, both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy before their eyes."

Then Joshua, son of Nun is annointed as the Israelites' leader.
